Events like festivals and conferences often come under scrutiny for their high resource consumption and waste production. But it doesn’t have to be that way! The Waterkant Festival in Kiel stands as a prime example of how sustainable event management can work—showcasing an authentic Zero-Waste approach. In collaboration with Zero Waste Kiel e.V., a comprehensive guide was developed to inspire other organizers.
A Project with Clear Commitment
The goal was ambitious: create a festival that avoids waste, saves resources, and demonstrates practical sustainability. Over three phases—planning, execution, and post-event evaluation—Zero-Waste principles were developed, tested, and refined.
A Guide for Sustainable Events
The guide, based on the Waterkant Festival experience, follows a clear five-step methodology:
- Assesment: Identify waste sources from the perspective of different user groups.
- Ideation: Creative brainstorming for Zero-Waste measures.
- Evaluation: Prioritize actions using proven tools like FMEA.
- Implementation: Put the chosen measures into practice
- Evaluation: Systematically assess and refine results.
This methodology is based on a sixth „R“: Rethink, a call to question existing processes and adopt more sustainable approaches.
Highlights from Practice
Sustainability was made visible and tangible during the 2024 festival:
- Introduction of waste separation stations and consistent waste sorting.
- Use of reusable materials for the stage and technical equipment.
- Catering featuring local and seasonal dishes served on real, reusable tableware. Stages and talks showcasing sustainability and circular economy
- …
The Outcome:
A significant reduction in waste, and a festival that serves as a blueprint for sustainable events.
An Invitation to Act
The collaboration between Zero Waste Kiel e.V. and the Waterkant Festival proves that Zero-Waste principles are not just possible but inspiring. The final guide provides organizers with practical steps to create their own sustainable events.
